WSS Summary: World 9, Amorous He - Session 3

Present Party: Aria, Claudia, Emori, and Steve.

Setting: Semi-modern city with sandstone buildings and an Arabian bazaar aesthetic. The city is very beautiful, clean, and has a heavy presence of  some kind of law enforcement. There is also a wall, about 40 or 50 feet high, surrounding the whole city. They spend this session inside the royal air force base, and parading through the streets.

The party arrived at the royal air force base, outside of the palace. With Raja, the head of palace security, accompanying them, none of the guards were any the wiser. Approaching the base, the number of guards dwindled, and they were met with the familiar face of Confidence Milton. He was wearing jeans and a T-shirt. His dark hair was short, which was strange for him, and he was younger than he normally was - somewhere in his early twenties.

When he escorted them inside, he refused to give them his name. He brought them to a platform on wheels that appeared to have a stage on it as well. The stage had the instruments required for a five-piece rock band, and a few speakers. There were flowers attached or perhaps draped over the sides of this platform.

The party presented their ransom, and asked for the princess. Confidence reminded them of some set terms: the ransom had to be delivered by way of a parade. Theron's crew had been preparing for it for a while now. He told Raja that the prince should plan to be here by eight in the morning. The parade would be done, and he'd have his older sister back.

Raja ensured that the party could get back to the palace to pick up some of the items that were previously in Steve's Secret Chest. Most of them did, but in the meantime, they left Confidence with Emori.

When they returned, they set about settling down in the hangar. They didn't want to risk staying at the palace and being associated with the theft, and they wanted to be here, to see what would happen. Claudia searched for some blankets, and Confidence told her that there were barracks; there were guards that used to be stationed here. When she did find the barracks, with floors covered in blood, she was reminded of that phrase "used to be stationed here." Still, she was able to find blankets with minimal damage and blood on them.

With some encouragement from her party, and some light teasing, Emori started flirting with him, and in doing so, she learned a couple of things.

- Confidence went by an older name that Emori had learned in the seventh world: Zoren. Another iteration of him had hated this name, and changed it to Confidence, but this one seemed content with it. Emori had actually guessed that Zoren was his name, and that made him laugh.

- Theron was a space pirate captain, and these guys fly all over the star systems.

- Confidence was suffering from nightmares, and that's frequently why he refused to sleep. Emori opted to stay awake with him that night.

- Confidence didn't like giving straight answers. He was frequently vague, and seemed to enjoy being vague with Emori and dodging her questions.

- Confidence was actually quite attracted to her.

Emori and Confidence slept together that night, in another hangar, away from the float. Claudia found them the next morning.

However, during the night, the party did note more people showing up. They weren't hostile in any way. They came with food, and more flowers. They decorated the float with them. More people came with instruments and costumes. They appeared to be getting ready for a big show.

In the morning, around six o'clock, the doors opened and more people entered, most wearing the same 21st century street clothes that the party had become accustomed to seeing people in. The very last person to enter was someone Steve and Aria recognized from their visions at the start of the world. It was a blue tiefling, dressed in a long coat with boney ram's horns. He had huge golden cuffs around his wrists, and on each, a familiar white light could be seen glowing within.

Claudia, noticing the light, stepped forward and attempted to grab the cuffs. This man flicked his wrist and she froze in place. She claimed to be introducing herself, and he seemed entirely unamused. He continued on his way, and she regained her ability to move shortly thereafter.

Emori spoke to Confidence about potentially being able to play the drums during the parade, up on the stage where she knew he would be, playing the guitar. They spoke to Theron about it, and he approved. He also asked Emori if the other three were with her, and if they were the ones who brought the ransom. She said that they were, and Theron offered to let them take part in the parade.

Theron returned to the rest of the party with Emori, and asked if they were "elites," which he clarified were magic-users. They said that they were, and he wondered if they would be able to do fireworks or a light show, as well as take down the two guard towers on either side of main street. That's where the parade was heading, down main street, and Theron claimed very nonchalantly that he was going to make a gate in the wall surrounding the city. He would take out the guard towers himself, but he was also in charge of making sure no one got shot. The party agreed, and positioned themselves on the back half of the float.

Theron walked up to the gems and precious metals. He waved his hand, and they all seemed to multiply, filling the float with more and more of them until there were large piles there.

Prince Ali arrived, and was made to walk in front of the parade float. He stood tall and proud, and said very little.

As Raja left the prince in the hands of the party and these apparent space pirates, Theron called to him and said, "Tell Aladdin that Genie sends his regards."

Once Raja had left, the parade got under way. The hangar doors opened, the band struck up their song, and they marched forward with Theron leading them, Ali right behind him, the float with the party on it, and then the marching band and dancers surrounding and falling behind the float. Guards attempted to stop them, but the party watched as Theron flicked his wrists, and their guns collapsed into cubes. Bullets ricocheted off some kind of magical wall of force. Theron sang, and his song was more of a joke or taunt, poking fun at the prince and his overall generosity. His face was plastered on every jumbotron in the city. The people in the city watched the parade in awe and shock. Once they got to the wall where main street ended, Claudia, Aria, and Steve launched spells such as Shatter, Fireball, Catapult, and others at the guard towers. They exploded as confetti launched into the air, and Theron ripped a hole in this massive wall.

The parade stepped through, and now the party found themselves on the other side, where there was a shanty-town and inhabited by the poor and hungry. A massive black starship shimmered into view where it was likely magically concealed, not far away.

Theron reached out a hand for Ali to shake as he finished his song. Ali took it, and Theron pulled him over to his ship and into the arms of two waiting crew members, who dragged him inside. The crew surrounding the float grabbed the gems, metals, and food that was on the float and began to distribute it.

Confidence began to lead Emori towards Theron, and the rest of the party followed suit.

Theron smiled. "Well... you're in it now, and if you'd like to join us, I'm always in need of more crew. Welcome aboard the Cave of Wonders."

"Wait…My Character Needs a Backstory?!" And Other New Player Surprises

Hey Everyone,

My name is Grace and I run the @DnDingbats twitter account, as well as the online community DnDingbats.com. Em has been kind enough to let me share my thoughts on character creation with you all! Em will also be guest posting on my site if you want to head over to check it out.

It isn’t a secret that I am new to TTRPGs, and have been focusing my energy on Dungeons and Dragons 5e. I waffled around the idea of playing for years, but the isolation that came with COVID-19 was the kick in the pants that I needed to start.

Since then, I have dove headfirst into the community, which I have found welcoming and exceptionally goofy (my type of people!).

Even with a community to ask questions and bounce ideas off, I found learning the rules of D&D more difficult than anticipated. I received great advice from my now DM, Sam. He said the best way to get in the game is to start with building a character. It doesn’t matter if you end up playing them, but going through the process helps solidify how the game works and gets the creative juices flowing.

In comes DnDBeyond’s Character Creator tool. All I can say is that I was over the moon when introduced to this. Not only are all options paired with succinct descriptions, it does the math for you (!!!). This allowed my attention to focus on the interesting and mechanical aspects of the character without getting bogged down in the numbers.

Rallyre
(Original Content, made by
DnDingbats using Picrew)

Using this friendly platform, Rallyre was born. A Half-Elf Arcane Trickster who is a master at improvised weapons and thinks on her feet.

She didn’t just appear out of thin air though, at first she was almost a skeletal version of who she is now. Let me explain.

I began rifling through the race section, trying to find something already familiar. Elves are all over pop culture, so it was a natural choice. I already knew a little elven lore, their general appearance, and demeanor. Done and done!

Next up are the classes. Having almost too many to choose from, I asked for advice. “Sam,” I said. “I know I want to be a little mischievous and nothing too complicated. Help!”

He simply advised I go for a Rouge, which has been perfect. Rogues start off relatively slow, but can quickly develop spell casting abilities and be insanely creative.

Plugging through the rest of the Character Creator was simple, until I got to backstory development. I met this page with a blank stare. I totally didn’t realize that I needed to essentially create an entire being, not just an avatar like with videogames. This took a few days, but the following prompts (along with the ones built into DnDBeyond) really helped me round out who Rallyre is.

- Are they a morning or night person?

- Do they prefer to fight with their words or their fists?

- Are they spontaneous or do they prefer to plan?

- Can they keep a secret?

- How do they feel about death and mortality?

- Are they quick to give second chances?

I’ve been playing Rall for a few months now, and have been surprised to see what direction she has taken along the way. She’s more antisocial than I anticipated, and prefers improvised weapons over traditional combat. It has been a blast to go on this adventure with her, I can’t wait to build out additional characters!

Overall, learning to build characters in the 5e system has helped me understand the game mechanics as a whole. It’s a wonderful first step to take into TTRPGs, and has helped me up my creative game in other ways.

MMC Summary: Session 14 - The Masked Monk of Riverside

Present Party: Keviks, Lupan, Nana, and Wren. Keviks was a bit late to the session, and came in just as the party left town.

Setting: Briefly Dragon's Valley, but mostly the town of Riverside in the kingdom of Midtia.

With the comfort of having some allies in this place, the party was eager to move forward from Dragon's Valley, and down to Lanti. They just had a few loose ends to tie up on the way out.

Fang had made the decision to finish his last date with Desire Garros that day, though Wren noted that Fang was a little uncomfortable with the extra security provided by Creed Garros, Desire's much older brother and the high paladin of Heimdall. Despite that, their early morning date went over fairly well, and they made sure to be quick. They weren't sure how much time they'd have, and they wanted a few days before the party in Lanti to really see what the situation was.

"Spark" of Summer

(Official Art from "Twisted Wonderland")

Before they left, Fang gave a letter to Wren, and asked if she would deliver it to Spark. She happily obliged. When she did, Spark had the idea that they were leaving in a bit of a hurry. He told her that when Fang seemed to be unsure of himself to remind the prince of what he'd told him.

Lupan also took the time to inform the prince's little cousin, Flower, that she would likely start her training at the Heimdall temple soon. He said that the high priest had been spoken to, and he believes some persuading had been done. At their meeting the night before, there had been. She was very excited.

Nana used Sending to contact Queen Wisps, Fang's mother, once more. She told her that she should visit Dragon's Valley, under the guise of visiting her mother. Once here though, she should visit Guildmaster Ruz, the changeling guildmaster of the Horizon Walkers, the queen's former guild. They would be able to fill her in. The queen admitted Ruz was an old friend, and assured Nana that she would do so in the coming days.

She also went to the Heimdall church to speak with Jack once more before they left. She asked him why he was doing this, and he admitted that he had a wife and children. He allowed her to look at a small sketchbook he had in his inside jacket pocket. It contained sketches of a dragonborn woman and two human-appearing children: a girl about seven or eight years old, and a boy about three or four years old. She read his mind using Detect Thoughts, and probed deeper. She saw a memory of Jack's where the Erdian army burst into his home and took his wife and children from him. Xade had been the one to threaten them. When asked if he knew where they were, he said they were in Gilden. Nana asked him to share what he knew, as a parental figure to the king and the princes; she was worried for her family as well.

Jack simply replied, "If I have to choose between your family and mine... I choose mine."

Nana turned to leave, and on the way out, Jack telepathically wished her good luck. He claimed she would need it.

Lastly, the party stopped to pick up some enchanted weapons and talk to Lilli about what she found out from her patron. She claimed she was granted a vision of a humanoid wearing a mask, standing at the edge of a river, dressed as a monk. She also brought up the strange goings-on in Riverside, where a masked monk that Hero's Way believed to be undead was terrorizing the town. The party had heard about this previously as well, from Lindsey at the Hero's Way front desk.

Now, feeling like that might be Axel, a Dragon Lancer like Quest, they suddenly had a reason to do some quick investigating in Riverside. Hopefully, they'd be able to solve the problem quickly, and keep going to Lanti.

Before they left, they picked up Finch as well, who was also invited to Orion Mulcaster's engagement party. He was splitting off from his own adventuring party. They'd stay here where it was safer until they could risk bringing Casper, their five-year-old half-tabaxi charge, with them to Lanti.

Their travel from Dragon's Valley was fairly uneventful, though they did learn something new about Quest. In his time, before becoming a Dragon Lancer, he told them that most people believe that he worked in Saspar as a court jester. While that was partially true, he was also the Sasparian spymaster.

Nana asked him if he'd ever met Ego - the gnomish Miditian spymaster - before, and Quest actually had. Quest had caused one of the biggest social gaffs of Ego's whole career at a Sasparian ball. Ego had been noticed when he shouldn't have been, and he was nearly arrested.

"Imagine the man's surprise when I turned up a little more than five years later like 'Hey, I'm here to save your country!'" Quest said, laughing. "He tried to come at me, and I kicked him across the room."

The party arrived in Riverside: a small town with many wood and log based structures. On their way in, they noticed a few homes and other buildings that had their walls completely smashed in. They opted to hurry to the guildhall and ask questions. They didn't want to stay long, and they didn't want to alert the local nobility to their arrival so they needed somewhere for the prince to be safe. Fang stayed with Finch in one of the rooms that Finch was able to secure as a guild member.

Hero's Way was currently flooded with townsfolk complaining about the monk and the damage he'd done. Lindsey - another identical Simulacrum of her, it would seem - directed the party to see the guildmaster immediately if they had any questions about the monk. She did warn them, however, that the guildmaster himself had fought the monk six times, and hadn't been successful.

Sea Elf, Class Unknown

They met with Guildmaster Waelonyl (but he preferred "Lune" or "Luney"): a massive sea elf gentleman with white hair, and bruises all over his chest. It was an easy guess that they were from fists, likely the monk's.

When they spoke to him about their suspicions regarding the monk's origins - thinking he may be a Dragon Lancer, looking for a staff - the guildmaster was a little confused. Then, they added they'd heard about it from Lilli Robertson, the guildmaster in Dragon's Valley. The only staff that Lune had seen recently of any note was the one brought back by a small adventuring party who'd recently lost their monk. His name had been Eraxan Vallhaleren, and he was a blue dragonborn. He and his party had taken many trips to Helheim, and apparently, their last hadn't gone so well. All of his effects had been returned to his family, and they lived on the outskirts of the town, by the river.

The party made their way there, and Castilian informed Keviks and Lupan that Elicia and Liam - the changeling Veers's party members who worked for the lich guildmaster Hugo DeMarco - had mentioned someone with the name Eraxan.

They entered the Vallhaleren house, which was occupied by an elderly blue dragonborn woman and her very strange cat. A series of strange things happened here, in the party's short stay.

- The woman herself appeared to be Eraxan's mother. She was upset by his death, but not distraught. She claimed that he was a good man. She was very hospitable, and made the party some tea while they talked.

- The cat's name was Starchild, and Mrs. Vallhalern claimed that she had pawed at the door for several minutes one day until she was let inside. She hasn't left since.

- The cat was cold to the touch.

- The cat seemed to understand anyone who spoke to it.

- The cat had strange magical abilities that Mrs. Vallhaleren appeared not to notice or be concerned about.

- It nullified the magic of a robe in the bedroom where they found the staff they were looking for when Nana attempted to touch the item.

- It could allegedly warp reality in some way, and made it seem as though the city of Gilden was visible from Riverside when, in fact, it was nearly 70 miles away.

- It cloned itself, or, at the very least, made some kind of copy of itself.

- Quest telepathically told Nana when she asked whether or not that cat was actually a cat, that it was not, and that he would explain later.

- When they did get the staff and were able to leave, Quest explained very simply that the cat was an eldritch abomination that that they were all very lucky that it liked them.

Aside from those points though, with some convincing, they were able to get Mrs. Vallhaleren's permission to take her son's staff for the good of the city. At the bottom of this wooden staff was the letter "A" in Sylvan - another sign that this might be the Dragon Lancer Axel's staff.

The party quickly filled in Finch and the prince, and then went to go find the masked monk. They planned to let Quest give him the staff, polymorphed as his old tiefling form, hoping that if it was Axel, he'd recognize him.

They found the masked monk further into the city. Guards were helping people out of the area as quickly as possible. Seeing the adventurers coming, they made sure to clear out as well. The monk was wearing a flat, white mask. His body was obscured by some kind of mist or smoke. His robes were ragged and torn, and his hair was up in a ponytail. He wore wraps around his hands, and he was punching relentlessly on the side of the building.

Quest called out to him, and the monk turned. Seeing the staff, it approached. Once it was within five feet of Quest, it slowly removed its mask... to reveal a very haggard looking Axel with sunken eyes and wrinkled skin.

Dragon Lancer: Axel

"You're alive..." he said, in a hoarse whisper.

Quest nodded. "My gods, brother, what happened to you?"

The Silver Dragon's Staff

(Art from "Elder Scrolls")

Axel didn't reply. He reached for the staff, and when Quest gave it to him, Axel began to glow with white light. His age and tiredness melted away to reveal a young and handsome changeling. Translucent silver wings sprouted from his back, and the head and neck of a silver dragon erupted from behind him. The head looked at Axel fondly, and then nuzzled him gently. Then, Axel disappeared, and the wooden staff transformed into silver, with a dragon's head at the top of it.

Item Description
(Made by me)
When the party gathered to look at the staff, they were greeted by an image of Axel, apparently illusory, who could not speak. However, he could create grand illusions on a large scale to communicate. They quickly went back to the room to investigate these developments further.

Nana cast Identify on the staff to learn its properties. Once those were known, the party decided that Keviks, the ranger, would be the best person to keep it. He attuned to it as a spellcasting focus. They also asked Axel where they might be able to put him to rest, as they had done with Quest in Dragon's Valley. Axel, through illusion and images, asked to be brought to his temple, where he'd first learned martial arts. That temple was in Bervuo, on the opposite side of the kingdom.

The party debated on whether or not they should keep the staff with them, to be prepared for the dangers of Lanti, or if they should send Quest to fly the staff to Bervuo, so Axel could rest and they could have two demigods on their side. However, the flight would be long, and there was no guarantee that Quest and Axel would make it back to Lanti from Bervuo if they were needed.

Ultimately, the party decided they would wait to see what Lanti held for them. If all was well or went well, they'd send Quest on his way with Axel to Bervuo while they continued on their journey.

Campaign Concept: The Show Must Go On

What Are We Making?

So, this concept is a bit of a weird one, but something that I honestly think could be a lot of fun, especially if you've got a table full of theatre geeks and you, the DM, are also a theatre geek or have been involved in some capacity with theatre.

This is an idea that hit me while I was watching the 2001 film Moulin Rouge a couple weeks ago. Side note: if you've never seen Moulin Rouge, I highly recommend it. Ever since, I've had this idea in my head and while it might be a bit difficult to pull off, I think it could work, especially with the right table.

This is an idea for what would probably be a short, lower level, very roleplay-heavy campaign where the goal would be to produce a successful play or musical from start to finish.

Let's take a look!

The Setting

If you plan on running this in a medieval setting, you're going to want to think about how plays are done in your world to begin with. Is this a society where plays are for the rich only? Are plays easily accessible? Are physical theaters common, or are plays done by traveling minstrel groups that come and go? The reason why these are important is because the goal is to make a successful show. For that, you need to know a few things:

- Who is your primary audience? If it's the rich, then you don't want to write a play that makes fun of the rich or nobility. If it's the everyday person in medieval times, your play might make something with themes that are widely appealing (like the common man becoming someone great for example.)

- What kind of stage are you working with? Is it big or small? How many audience members can it hold? What's the seating configuration? You'll need to know this for blocking and also for actor entrances and exits.

- Do you have the capability for special effects? What I mean by that is magic or some type of chemical mixture that can produce certain effects. Luckily this is fantasy, so there are a lot of cool options for you to explore when it comes to special effects that can be done.

Once you have that down, you'll have to establish your setting in one of those places or among a certain troupe. You can also have it so that the players have to start from scratch and get their own actors, stage crew, and everything else. Having a traveling troupe would be a good excuse to get them out of one city and that can substitute for the travel that is typically inherent in games like D&D. Roadside encounters are great avenues for some combat, and that combat can lead to the party getting things to sell so they have more money for their show.

"Adventuring" in this game isn't so much a goal as it is means to an end. If your setting has a prominent adventuring culture, then your party might pick up adventuring as a side job. They'll help out the city they're in, or each of the cities and towns that they travel to, to make the coin necessary to sustain their little troupe. Of course, they may also decide to put on other plays that their troupe has already done and make money that way as well. However, I'm sure that adventuring would be a bit more lucrative.

The Plot

With this group, you'll have to have session zero all together. Since all these people have the same goal of putting on this one show, then you'll definitely want to work out a couple of things. Party roles are the most important. Are they all writing the show together? Is one person doing the script and another doing the music? Is one of the characters the director, or the wardrobe expert, or the special effects designer, or maybe even the lead actor? There are a lot of people that make a show happen, so there are a lot of possibilities. The players could even all be the actors and are hired by the playwright and director to be in a pre-established show, rather than having the players come up with a show themselves. It's whatever would be fun for your table.

If the players are running / writing the show, then they'll also be responsible for finding the NPCs that will help them put on the best show. I like the idea of the party meeting new people and becoming so attached or enamored with them that they become important. They really are building this show from the ground up, and seeing it be a success at the end will be really satisfying if done correctly.

Of course, no show is complete without the drama. I have a few ideas for "hitches" or bumps in the road that might complicate relationships between people in the show.

- Actor quarrels can be common in theatre, especially among particularly petty people who may be upset about not getting a certain role.

- Perhaps there's a rival theatre troupe or play house that's also putting on a new show. Fun rivalry? Espionage? Sabotage? Maybe the players can convince some of the actors or crew there to switch sides and come work for them. Who knows?

- The two leads are hardcore pining for each other. Can the party set them up outside of the show?

- If you want to play up the "part-time adventurers" idea, maybe one of the actors or someone in the crew has a family that's in trouble. They party goes to help because they love the people in their troupe.

- The special effects designer needs a specific component for a certain spell to make the show even better. Time to go either shopping or adventuring to find it!

- Secure funding from a local noble. That way money becomes a bit less of a problem or a limitation.

Then you have the endgame. Opening night. To me, this is the climax of the game. Everything has to go perfectly, and you have to hope for rave reviews. If you don't get them, you can always continue the game with the characters workshopping the show and trying again, but the goal is a great show. You're going to want to have the players make checks, and maybe they get extra modifiers based on their relationships with the cast and crew or certain ideas they had along the way.

Reward creativity in this game, more than in other games. Reward them for their reputations among their audience and the relationships they've made. That's going to be a key feature and core concept of a game like this. If you've ever been in a theatre production, it's often that the cast becomes something of a second family. Luckily, D&D is also a great place to explore the found family trope. You definitely want to play that up in a game like this.

WSS Summary: World 9, Amorous He - Session 2

Present Party: Aria, Claudia, Emori, and Steve.

Setting: Semi-modern city with sandstone buildings and an Arabian bazaar aesthetic. The city is very beautiful, clean, and has a heavy presence of  some kind of law enforcement. There is also a wall, about 40 or 50 feet high, surrounding the whole city. They spend this session inside the royal palace.

The party is escorted into the large marble palace near the edge of the wall, and they're admitted inside with Raja, who claimed to be a member of the prince's guard, escorting them in. The palace was one of the most ostentatious places they'd been, covered in bright rugs, tapestries, colorful mosaic tile, and clay pottery. They were brought directly to the prince's bedroom.

Prince Ali the Amorous
Human
(Art by toherrys on DeviantArt)
The prince was a young human gentleman, in his mid-twenties. He'd specifically requested for Raja to bring him thieves. The party lied, saying that they were from Civanta (the city they'd lived in during their sixth world), and when the prince asked if that was in another star system, they answered yes. From there, he was a bit more willing to explain who he was. He introduced himself as Prince Ali the Amorous, and claimed that the party might have heard him referred to as "Amorous He" from time to time.

Ali needed help from the party because his sister had been kidnapped by an individual named "Bardic Captain Theron." The party already knew this; they'd seen it on the news. However, although the royal family had been given a ransom, Ali told them that his parents had no intention of paying it. The king and queen were content to let their daughter and heir die. Ali was very much not. So, he needs the party to break into the vault and steal a few precious metals and gems that were listed in the ransom:

- 75 golden camels. These were essentially gold bars. Each bar weighed about twenty pounds.

- 53 purple peacocks. These were small purple gems that were shaped like spades.

- 95 white Persian monkeys. These were pearl-like gems that were slightly translucent and very delicate. They could be crushed very easily.

- 60 elephants. These were silver rods, which didn't weigh as much as the camels, but were definitely very dense.

There were a few other things that Ali mentioned about the captain and the vault:

- The vault itself was guarded by six people and there were two doors to get in. Once inside, there were four drones that patrolled the inside. According to both Ali and Raja, the drones were very easily broken and if they were broken, the only person who'd be alerted would be Raja.

- The vault was also flanked by two other rooms. One was the armory, the other was a study, and there was also a servants' hallway in the wall nearby.

- The contents of the vault were counted every night at 7 pm, and it took them about 2 hours to count it.

- The ransom needed to be delivered in the form of a parade. Theron had assured Ali that he would take care of the logistics as long as he could get the ransom to a place where a float could be built.

- Ali had arranged for the air force base in the city to hold the float.

- Ali had never met Theron in person. He only knew that he was powerful, and that his ship - Cave of Wonders - flew all across space. His only personal contact with him had been a maroon tiefling with short dark hair and golden eyes. Other than that, he had a phone that only texted from one number, and he wasn't even sure that it was Theron who was texting him.

- The party immediately latched onto the suspicion that this person was probably Confidence.

With this information, the party set about planning their heist. They were also given a room within the palace, should they need it. Raja would be able to grant them access to servants' hallways if they needed them. Ultimately, the party decided to wait until tomorrow night, after the vault had been counted that night.

They settled into their room. Steve emptied the contents of his Secret Chest, so they would be able to use it tomorrow for their heist. They hid the other items in the room. From there, they had a talk about Confidence, where Emori admitted that she felt like she was in love with him. She wanted to find and protect him, especially after not knowing what happened to him in the last world, and now believing him to be working for some kind of evil pirate.

Emori also admitted that when it came time for them to complete their System contract, she would wish to be with him as well as get her original wish.

That sparked the conversation topic of what everyone's wishes were... and the party decided that they were close enough, at this point, to share their wishes.

- Steve wanted 8 weeks of paid vacation time at his job, which was accounting for space pirates. The rest of the party was shocked by this wish, especially Aria, but then she recalled something an unknown being had told her about wishes from other transmigrators: "Having noble wishes isn't uncommon... but it's also not as common as you might think."

- Aria had failed to protect her coven of witches, and that displeased her goddess. In retaliation, her goddess had taken the love of her life, Silas. She wanted to get him back.

- Claudia is engaged in her home world, to an elven woman. She wanted to share the same lifespan as her fiancée, so that she would not die so far before her.

- Emori's older brother, Emmet, had been taken by strange creatures who were trying to open a portal from the Dream Realm into the material plane. However, he was wrongly taken; she was supposed to have been taken. She wanted him back, and wanted to make sure these creatures couldn't escape into the material plane.

After the party shared these wishes, they realized something. They had never told their wishes to the System beforehand... but that didn't mean that it necessarily didn't know them.

Claudia decided to try and reach out to Hacker again. It seemed to have taken an interest in her last time. She hoped it would again, and that it would be able to elaborate on the situation and on some things it had mentioned to her the last time.

~~~~~
Hacker answered, and Claudia asked it for more information on the offer it had given her before. What exactly had it meant by "a guarantee?"
It explained, "When the System grants wishes, it does so by taking the most logical route to come to that conclusion. It also takes free will into account. I do not. I will give you what you want exactly how you want it, and I will ensure that you do not lose it. It is a guarantee."
"Do you know what the System would offer me?"
"It would give you the same lifespan as the woman you love... by turning either you into an elf, or her into a tiefling. You would be the same race, and therefore, have the same lifespan. However, if one of you died earlier... the other would still live."
"And what could you offer me?"
"I would soul-bind you," it declared. "You would live as long as she lived. She would live as long as you lived. If one of you died, both of you would die. Literally, you would have the same lifespan... and nothing would be able to take that from you."
Claudia said that she would speak to her party about it, and Hacker reminded her that if she needed to find it again, to look for the black door in the System Space.
~~~~~

The party had a brief discussion when Claudia's mind had returned from Hack Space, but they ultimately settled on the fact that they didn't know who they could trust now. Emori tried contacting anyone else - Mod or Playtester specifically - but she received no answer. They wondered if they were overstepping their boundaries; they knew that Mod had gotten in trouble before for being "too helpful." They hoped that wasn't the case now.

~~~~~
On the night of the heist, the party was escorted by Raja through the servants' hallways, which were very empty by the time that midnight rolled around. They used Dimension Door to get in, and Magic Missile to disable the drones. Steve summoned his Secret Chest, and the party investigated the room. They were able to find and collect everything they needed, even ensuring to be extra delicate with the white Persian monkeys. Then, they used Dimension Door to get out again.
From there, Raja helped them get out of the palace, and escorted them towards the air base. As they arrived, they saw someone waiting for them. It was Confidence Milton, but a slightly younger version of him, somewhere in his early twenties.
It seemed like it was time to plan a parade...
Present Party: Athena, Nytra, and Sylyeras are now the main adventuring party. Both Venus and Yera also appear in this session.
Setting: The town of Vesnurk and the cities of Delasta and Jarna in Saspar.
Map of Iparnord, the Northern Continent
The party is currently in the east-most kingdom: Saspar
Yera and Athena, having successfully smuggled the staff across the border, helped them get settled into new lives, either here or across country lines. Finn also assisted in this endeavor monetarily where he could.
Jack
Human, age 21
(Art made using Artbreeder)
- Jack, the lovable human boy who formerly had no name, ended up working for Venus's boyfriend, Civis, at his bakery.
- Yera also decided that she wanted some time away from home, time to really be an adult. She asked Jack if he would be willing to get a small house or apartment with her. She would return to Aldea, get Elle, and come live in Vesnurk for a while. It wasn't like she'd be alone with no one to help her with her baby either. Venus and her whole family were around. Venus's mother and brothers had even offered to get her some work at their winery. They could always use the extra hands during harvest time.
- Vanan and his sisters, Laurel and Moira, as well as the elderly tiefling woman, Silence, all opted to sail to Aldea. Silence was interested in joining Athena's faith. According to Yera, Vanan and his sisters would also have a lot of support there.
- Sora, Paprax, and Balthazar had a couple friends in Saspar that they went off by themselves to go and see. They would be able to help them get settled.
- Vonbek the dwarf and Caira the elf opted to go to Midtia, where they could get in touch and potentially work for Confidence at his estate.
Before everyone left, Yera and Venus organized a party at the winery in the form of a large picnic. During this party, Athena took note of something strange. Throughout the party, she'd seen the man she'd overheard to be the owner of the winery: Venus's oldest brother, Bacchus. For a man who owned a winery, she found it very odd that he didn't drink.
Out of curiosity, she approached him about it.
~~ CW BEGINS ~~
When Athena asked why he wasn't drinking, Bacchus admitted that he'd almost died once. Since then, he hadn't had a sip of alcohol.
"How long ago was that?"
He smiled at her. "We just celebrated 15 years sober. My family threw a little party and everything."
"How did you do it?" she asked.
Bacchus explained how he'd found other things to do, eat, or drink whenever he wanted wine or alcohol. There were mixtures and potions that tasted vaguely like wine, but had no alcohol. He also confessed that peppermint candies had been a help to him too. He also relied a lot on the people he loved - his mother, brother, and sister - to keep him sane and together.
Athena, leaving her daughter Odette with Yera and Silence, decided to go for a walk. Without even realizing, she'd ended up back at the tavern they were staying at. She ordered a glass of wine... but she didn't drink it. She only looked.
Silence came back before the others, and ushered Athena upstairs to bed. Athena went, but begrudgingly and when Silence had tried to comfort her or get her to relax, Athena very calmly refused her help. Silence, through the Sending spell, said that she cared about Athena before she left for her own room.
Unsure of how to respond, what to do, and also feeling some kind of anger - at herself, at the world, who knows? - Athena went back down to the bar. She took the glass of wine from the bar, and brought it upstairs.
She drank it, and then she went to bed.
~~ CW ENDS ~~
In the next few days, messages were sent and received by old allies from Finn and Athena to meet in Delasta, Saspar - the nearest port city to Vesnurk. Sylyeras's ship would take Yera, Vanan, Laurel, Moira, and Silence back to Aldea and then Yera back to Saspar.
Within a week, Sylyeras arrived. Nytra, a former traveling companion of the party when Boris had been away before, arrived on the same day on a boat that Finn had chartered for her. When they all met up in Delasta and were introduced, Finn gave them the run-down about Saspar, as well as what they could expect with some recent political developments.
- The country was run by an elected grandmaster. The grandmaster must be an arcane spellcaster, much like how the government in Nytra's home kingdom of Medego worked. The grandmaster was the signature needed to promise Saspar's help against the cults.
- What they really needed from Saspar was their arcane prowess and arcana-tech abilities.
- The current grandmaster is actually a good friend of Finn's... but he just retired and is no longer able to sign documents, even though he is still the current leader of the kingdom until a new grandmaster is elected.
- The party has to find one or a few good candidates and (as Finn would add quietly) it might be beneficial for them to... ensure someone they like is elected.
- Finn added that his friend and former adventuring party member - Simon Cleves - lived and ran a magic school in the capital city of Jarna. He'd know more about the political situation.
With that, the party made their way swiftly to Jarna, taking an airship that acted like public transportation from city to city. They arrived in mere hours, and Finn escorted them to Simon's school: Jarna's Premiere Arcane Academy, otherwise known as "The Premiere."
While Finn met with Simon, Nytra decided to stay behind and wait for him. Meanwhile, Athena, Sylyeras, and Odette went for a walk around the school. It was summer time, so little to no classes were being held. As they walked, the few groups of students they did pass mentioned a couple of things about the upcoming elections, including some things about one "Pharius Veladorn."
Sylyeras actually asked about him to one of the students he heard talking, and she said that he had just finished his graduate program at this school, and he was running for grandmaster. He was also in the building. She and her friend saw him go into the library with his girlfriend.
Athena and Sylyeras tracked him down, hoping to make friends. They found him: a drow with long white hair and purple skin, alongside a familiar tiefling girl. She was familiar in that she shared Venus's same skin tone, hair color, eye color, and horns. Sylyeras recognized her immediately as Venus's younger sister, Minerva (or "Minnie" as she preferred.) Believing at first that they were there for politics, Minnie and Pharius were happy to turn Athena and Sylyeras away, at least for now. However, after it was clarified that they weren't lawyers or lobbyists, they were welcome to stay. Pharius talked a bit about the politics of everything, but when the party told them they were traveling with Celorfin Lihtaur for a political thing, he offered them a chance to meet some other candidates. He knew that several of them were going to a ball a few days from now. Minnie left for a bit to go get their tickets. She and Pharius didn't intend on going.
As they spoke, Athena began to study Pharius and ask him some questions about his time here in Jarna. He also interacted with Odette quite a bit, and as this happened, Athena realized some strange similarities.
- Pharius and Odette had similar skin tones, though hers was a little lighter.
- They laugh in the exact same way, and take the same breaths.
- They both have dimples in the exact same spots.
- Athena recalled a party that she'd been to here in Jarna... about three or four years ago - nearly Odette's age. Pharius said that he'd been to many parties in his time, but stopped around that same time as well, to focus on his studies.
- Athena had always guessed that Odette's father might have been a drow, or perhaps a half-drow. Odette had pointed ears and lavender skin like some drow did.
As Odette, at Athena's request, told Pharius her age, something went off behind his eyes. He realized. He knew.
Minnie returned, and Athena whisked Odette away for a moment. Nytra also caught up with the party, and with some encouragement from Minnie, the two girls scurried off to the workshops to test some new explosives Nytra was working on.
Sylyeras asked Pharius what he was going to do, and he simply replied that he didn't know.
After a moment, Athena returned. Sylyeras offered to take Odette to get ice cream, and Odette was very pleased. They left Athena and Pharius alone.
Athena sighed, "We need to talk."
MMC Summary: Session 13 - Allies
Present Party: Keviks, Lupan, Nana, and Wren.
Setting: Dragon's Valley, in the kingdom of Midtia.
The party left Jack with Nana's eidolon Castilian and in the hands of the paladins of Heimdall. As they were leaving, they walked out of the temple of Heimdall and into an argument. The high priest - Vargas - was arguing with a woman on horseback. She was dressed in red, and had a wide-brimmed hat with a short, gray veil. The veil covered her eyes, but no other parts of her face. On her shoulder was a bird that looked like a raven, but had bright red feathers and purple eyes. She was also very calm and poised, whereas Vargas was nearly screaming at her. At her side were the familiar faces of Veers, the changeling who worked for Hugo DeMarco the lich guildmaster in Kystad, and his adventuring party.
This woman addressed the party, introducing herself as Lilli Robertson, the local guildmaster of the adventuring guild, Hero's Way. She requested custody of Jack, with the hope that he might know something about the human traffickers in the area. Jack was the party's captive, and as the prince's escort, (and with Nana being the Royal Court Mage) it was their decision. They allowed it for the time being. Castilian and Veers's party members went and retrieved Jack. Lilli thanked them for their cooperation, and for the gryphon and dragon parts they'd sold to the guild. She'd found good use for them in her alchemy.
Castilian stayed with Veers's party at Hero's Way. He, being a creature of law and goodness, actually stopped one of Veers's party members, Liam, from torturing Jack for information. Liam definitely wasn't happy about it. Castilian also learned the name of the elven paladin woman who travels with Liam and Veers: Elicia. She also seemed to be against the torture of this man.
She brought up someone named Eraxan, and how that person would not be proud of what Liam was doing. That made Liam stop.
The party went back to the estate to fill in the crown prince. When they arrived, they also noticed that their dragon demigod friend, Quest, had returned.
Keviks took the lead, and told the party about the telepathic conversation he'd had with Jack. The details of what he told them are all in the last session summary, but he left out a couple things:
- He didn't tell anyone about the assassination plans, where certain members of the forces of Erdia were assigned to kill certain people within the royal family.
- He didn't tell the party why Jack believed Alaion had gone back to Erdia.
- Keviks did not tell the party that Jack had an escape plan.
The party also started drawing on any historical knowledge about Erdia and Midtia in terms of former conflicts. Nana recalled an old conflict several centuries ago, when Erdia's borders extended far into what is now Midtia. She knew that currently Erdia was ruled by an elected dictator. She didn't know his name though. Keviks, however, recalled it: Draxon Turnuroth.
Quest
The Copper Dragon Demigod
Upon hearing that name, Quest grew very alarmed. He recognized the name "Turnuroth." That was the name of the ancient red dragon that had killed the Dragon Lancers. He had sealed them in their prized possessions and prevented them from reincarnating until now with the party's intervention. Quest admitted that he didn't know what happened to Turnuroth exactly. He'd presumed that another party member had killed him.
"I don't know much about what happened at the very end," he said. "I wasn't able to see from where I was and then we all got buried when the cave collapsed."
He insisted that if they wanted to know more, their best course of action would be to find the other Dragon Lancers. Specifically, he said that Variel, Axel, or Dharvas would know more.
With this new information, the party decided that they needed to set up a meeting with the prominent figures of Dragon's Valley. They figured that the best way to do this was to see Guildmaster Robertson again, and see if she could contact everyone they needed.
They went to Hero's Way, where they met up with her and their other adventuring friends: Finch, Arcta, Kressa, and Boomer. Casper, the young half-tabaxi boy they'd rescued, was there as well. Veers stood in the corner of the room for a while before going to report on any progress made with the interrogation of Jack. They filled them in on most things regarding what Keviks learned. Their fellow adventurers, who had planned to head to Lanti tonight, had suddenly changed their mind, knowing that Xade would be there and that Casper might be in danger. Instead, most of that party opted to stay in Dragon's Valley. Finch, who was also invited to Wren's brother's engagement party in Lanti on account of his noble lineage, would accompany the party to Lanti tomorrow, rather than go on his own. Lilli assured the party that she could have Lindsey at the front desk contact everyone they wanted to attend this meeting, and quietly. They'd meet tonight, around nine pm. Veers returned with Liam, who frustratedly informed the party that, due to Castilian's moral code, there wasn't much Liam was able to do. Ultimately, it was decided to send Jack back to the church and put him in the hands of the paladins there.
Before the meeting, Nana did one other thing: she used Sending to contact Queen Wisps, Fang's mother, knowing that she was far more level-headed and far less trusting than her husband, the king. The queen was also formerly a Horizon Walker; she was capable and could handle herself in a fight. She managed to tell her that she believed there was a plot against the royal family, not to tell King River, and that she needed to exercise extreme caution and, above all, trust Fang.
The queen replied that she understood, and that she would keep the information quiet for now. Her only other request was that Fang be kept safe.
~~~~~

The time for the meeting rolled in, and there were several people in attendance:

- Our adventuring party.

- Prince Fang - Nana had insisted on his attendance as a political leader and representative of the royal family.

- Guildmaster Lilli Robertson of Hero's Way.

- Guildmaster Ruz of the Horizon Walkers.

- High Priest Vargas and High Paladin Creed Garros of the church of Heimdall - Creed Garros is also the much older brother of Desire Garros, one of the bachelorettes.

- Finch, Kressa, Arcta, and Boomer as Hero's Way members and trusted friends.

- Quest, for the specific reason that the party wanted to play all of their cards now, in the hopes of gaining as many allies as possible. If they wouldn't listen to them or to the crown prince, perhaps they would listen to a reincarnated demigod with the soul of a legendary hero.

The party purposefully excluded:

- The four noble families of Dragon's Valley. They didn't know many of their allegiances, and they were afraid of getting too political. What they needed now was protection, and the guilds and church were their best bets.

- Veers and his party, simply because nobody trusted Hugo DeMarco, and they knew that Veers was a direct line to him.

The party told this group everything that they knew, from their travels and from what they were able to get out of Jack. They also revealed Quest, and Quest told them all everything that he knew regarding the situation and about the metallic dragon gods. What they needed now was a sure safe haven, in case things went wrong. They needed people with power who they knew they could trust to protect the crown and stop and invading army. Dragon's Valley is well-known for its defenses and they are a stubborn group. During the Dragon War, this village had been destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times. The people had refused to leave.

Nana led most of the discussion with the others chiming in as needed. Wren spoke about her brother's potential involvement. Keviks spoke of what he knew about Erdia. Fang said very little, but had promised the room that, for this, he'd owe everyone in the room a favor. Coming from the future king, that was nothing to sneer at.

The results of the meeting were as follows:

- The other adventuring party was willing to help in any way they could. Finch said, "We've known you this long. You've helped us. You saved Casper. There's no reason for us not to believe or trust you at this point."

- Ruz insisted that the Horizon Walkers would be on board, simply because Xade had been one of their own. He was a serial killer in Dragon's Valley before this, and that was what forced his expulsion from the guild. Additionally, Ruz stipulated that they wanted the magic bow that Xade had, so they could destroy it. Nana agreed, but said that they'd only receive it after the safety of the royal family was ensured.

- Lilli claimed to be unable to offer much, even with the favor. She did, however, promise to contact her patron: Mimir, the god of wisdom and prophecy. She would use her powers to try and locate other Dragon Lancer items so the party could find more information on Turnuroth. She promised nothing other than that.

- Creed wanted justice for the three paladins Xade had killed in his escape. He also wanted to ensure that his sister got a chance at her date with the prince, and that it would be safe. He requested to put extra paladins on as part of an additional guard. Fang agreed, though the party noted his slight discomfort at the idea.

- Vargas agreed when Creed did, though begrudgingly after he'd been called out by the party and Guildmaster Robertson for some misogynistic actions in the past and present.

It seemed as though the party had secured a verifiable set of allies and a safe haven in Dragon's Valley.

~~~~~
When the party returned to the estate for the night, Keviks asked for Wren to see him in his room when she could.
Keviks admitted to her that she was the person he trusted most in the party. Because of that, so she knew exactly what they were all heading into, he told her pieces of his past as a member of the Erdian army.
- As soon as Keviks was born, he was ripped away from his family. He'd been a soldier since birth.
- His first order out of training camp was to return to his village in the forest, where he'd been born, and to set it on fire. He'd done it, and killed everyone including his own family without asking questions. He'd been taught not to ask questions
- He was welcomed into the army after that. Free to make his own decisions (as long as they were in Erdia's best interests, of course.)
- He'd spent about a year, pillaging and conquering towns and villages to keep them under Erdian rule. This didn't bother him; it wasn't what drove him to leave. What did drive him to leave... was tyranny. Keviks did not want a world ruled by only one man or one country.
- Keviks flew away as fast as he could. Erdia hunted him for a short while, but they stopped. After all, what damage could a lost aarokocra with no family and no ideals but those imposed upon him by Erdia?
- Keviks admitted to Wren that he was not - is not - a good person. But he hopes now that by fighting back against Erdia, it can redeem him... if only a little.
What Are We Making? I'm back! I'm out of university (with a bachelor's degree, huzzah!) and I figured it was time to get back in...
